A small split-level cottage in Dublin is to be extended for a single occupant, creating a single large bedroom at first floor rear. The ground floor is to be opened through from the high-ceilinged formal room in the south-facing front of the house, right back to the small yard at the rear. At the back of the yard a studio is to be built with a strip light at the top of the back wall.
The first floor now becomes a relatively large bedroom suite, with bathroom and terrace. Due to planning considerations of overlooking, the terrace is to be lit from the top only, and present a closed wall to the rear of the property. The existing rear roof slope is to be peeled back and replaced with glass to afford daylight to the entrance hall and centre of the plan. While the neighbours will be protected from the overlooking resulting from the opening up of the rear of the house, the owner enjoys a totally private bedroom world, secluded even from the living space downstairs.
